What makes Put-in-Bay special as a vacation spot?

Put-in-Bay has been an island resort since the 1850's. It has many wonderful attractions, including a National Park. Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial opened in 1915 and commemorates Oliver Hazard Perry's defeat of the British fleet just off the island's western shore in the Battle of Lake Erie, September 10, 1813.

Perry is remembered as saying "Don't Give Up The Ship," and "We have met the enemy and they are ours." It was the first defeat ever dealt the British navy. The 352-foot Doric column stands as a symbol of lasting peace between the Unites States and Canada along the longest unprotected border in the world.    Back
